Engineered hardwood flooring is a product made up of a core of softwood, plywood or HDF and a top layer of hardwood veneer that is glued on the top surface of the core and is available to supply in almost any type of wood species. The product has the natural characteristics of the selected wood species . The “engineered” product has been designed to provide greater stability, particularly where moisture or heat pose problems for solid wood floors.
The instability of solid hardwood is usually moisture or heat related. Under adverse conditions, solid hardwood floors can warp, cup, swell or split apart. Engineered hardwood flooring overcomes these problems by constructing a multiple-ply or softwood core which dramatically increases the stability of the flooring This makes engineered hard wooden flooring a better choice for installation over problematic subfloors, underfloorheating (depending on manufactures instructions).
The hardwood veneer, or top layer of hardwood, can typically be 0.6mm to 6mm or more in thickness. A quality hardwood veneer will provide many years of wear, with the thicker veneers allowing the sanding and refinishing of the flooring.
Most engineered wood floors are floating and each plank is glued together via a tongue and groove or locked together using modern click systems therefore it is not fastened to the sub-floor, making the product easier and more affordable to install. This also allows the product to be installed with sound reducing underlays important in flats and upstairs bedrooms.
We recommend that skirting boards are removed when installing an engineered wood floor and new ones refitted after installation a service carried out by ourselves. Shopuld this not be possible we can offer selection of real wood scotia or quadrant.
